Video mixers qre also called the vision mixers and in the U.S.A. they are usually called video switchers or production mixers.
They are used in post production to assemble signals from different sources together into one image.
Video mixers are applied to produce videos/movies but do more often find application in a live broadcast, either trough a remote broadcast (eg from an O (utside) B (road cast)) Van or from the studio. Using a keyboard a video mixer operator (short video mixer) is able select signals, and mix them, real-time, adding transaction images and adding effects, at the directions of a director.
This generally occurs mainly by using 2 series of buttons which, on most professional video mixers can be found separated on the control panel . These are called buses and the bus used to add effects and images to the signal is called the Preview bus. With the programbus the video mixer (or rather, the director) determines which signals enter the video or broadcast and he/she can easily switch between signals possibly adding one or more effects.
